FeedYYC is a mobile app that eases the process of donating food to the Food Bank by connecting companies to independent truckers for donation pickups.
How might we encourage companies to donate unused food to the Food Bank?
The Calgary Food Bank distributes more than 280 emergency food hampers every day, relieving food insecurity and providing support for individuals who are experiencing emergency situations. With 83% of food donations come from Food Industry partners, there is an ongoing need to encourage more companies to donate their unused food to the Food Bank.
Many companies don’t have the resources to get their excess product to the Food Bank’s warehouse.
The Food Bank employs independent truckers to pick up unused food from companies and deliver it to the Food Bank, however companies aren’t aware of this service.
Feed YYC provides a quick and easy way for companies to schedule a time for donation pick up that is most convenient for them.
The app allows users to create an account for their company and schedule pickups of the items they are donating. The Food Bank simply uses the app as a scheduling assistant to coordinate their independent truckers to pick up donations from the company on the scheduled date and time.
Tasked with addressing one of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals using a Human-Centered Design approach, I chose to address Goal 2: Zero Hunger.
Focusing on Food Insecurity, I started with desk research, ethnographic design research and interviewed subject matter experts to fully understand challenges faced by individuals who are food insecure. My research was redirected to the Calgary Food Bank after learning about the positive impact it has on those who are food insecure. I interviewed stakeholders at the Food Bank to gain an understanding of what is working well and what are some of the challenges they face.
The Calgary Food Bank identified a need to encourage more companies to donate their unused food to the Food Bank, as there is always a need for more food.
